Almue
Modern

“Almuen” means the “commoners” and was used condescending about the poorer classes in society who farmed the land.

Almue Modern is a venue for the meeting between folklore crafts and minimalistic aesthetics (yet not functional). A rigid repetitive structure frames the rich ornamentation of the furniture.

Almue Modern is a venue for a meeting between folklore crafts and minimalistic aesthetics ( yet not functional ). A rigid repetitive structure frames the rich ornamentation of the furniture. The poor comfort is recognizable in public seating designed to alienate those who could need a rest. The function of the furniture raises questions rather than serving a purpose.

The Danish writer Martin A. Hansen (1909-1955 ) animated Almue culture to be the harmony between man and nature, that post-war industrialization was destroying. His perspective on Almue culture gives a reflection on our contemporary living and use of resources and materials.

By using the common materials of our times, we pay an ode to Almue culture and its needed principles. We too have used leftover wood, more specifically post-production cut-off of MDF boards. The ornamentation is made by cutting into the MDF boards with the blade of a plunge saw. The cutting is mimicking wood carvings of Almue culture.

The irregular ornamentation made with the plunge saw has been covered by layers of paint. The many layers of paint ghost away the ornamentation and give body to a reflection on time and material.
